RIP Grand Master Roc Raida

Another great has left us this year. Grand Master Roc Raida passed away on Saturday after sustaining major injuries from a car crash earlier this month. Roc Raida was probably best known in the mainstream as the official DJ for Busta Rhymes tour; however, to the Hip Hop Community, Roc Raida has a special place in Hip Hop history as one of the pioneers and envelope pushers of DJing.

To be honest, I never studied videos he personally put out. But I learned about Roc Raida from battle videos he was in. I respected the man as a dope turntablist and a pioneer placing him in the ranks of DJ's like Grand Wizard Theodore, Qbert, Mix Master Mike, etc.

This video here is how I first was introduced to Roc Raida.

Besides this epic battle, I'd watch other DMC videos from the 90's and Roc Raida always had routines that I'm just now starting to understand the complexity and genius of.

The world truly lost a great artist this weekend. So for all you DJ's who know a little something about our history, take a moment and learn a juggle routine (and throw in a body trick or two) in honor of Grand Master Roc Raida. Blessings.

miniMixdown Episode#10 - 2pac now available for download!

I was sitting around waiting for inspiration to hit me on this week's mix and I got to thinking of what has happened this year. So many of our icons have passed away. Patrick Swazey, MJ, Baatin...Then I remembered the conversation I had with @DJKSLY on our way to the show on Monday. She mentioned that 2Pac passed away on Sept 13, 1996. I did a Biggie tribute earlier this year in March, and so I figured I'd put together a quick little 2Pac miniMixdown. The Foreign Exchange @ Los Angeles

I had the honor of taking my homegirl @DJKSLY to the Foreign Exchange show at the Roxy in Hollywood on Sunday. It was an awesome show to say the least. These guys rock with such positive energy its pretty much impossible to leave the show without being revitalized! The chemistry between Phonte (1/2 of Little Brother) and Nicolay is evident enough in the albums, but their stage presence together along with Yazarah, Carlitta Durand, Zo!, and Darien Brockington makes watching them live even so much better.

When Foreign Exchange performs, they don't just sing to you. They take you by the hand and bring you on an intimate journey through their music. Phonte keeps it real by injecting some witty humor in their songs ABOUT love (as opposed to love songs).

If you get the chance, we highly recommend that you check these guys out live! K-Sly and I had such a great time. She said it was one of the best shows she's been to in a long time, and I agree.

And now some videos!

Thanks to Nefarious for droppin by on this week's Mixshow

I've been uber busy this week and haven't gotten around to publicly thanking Nefarious (@NefTheDamaja) for coming through the show this week. This dude is DOPE! A little shy in person, but good people, for sure. Check out the beat set he played for us at http://tv.hitekfx.com. He's only 18 and has got some mad skills!!!

Mixdown Episode #9 - Common

I almost didn't have an idea to work with this week for my weekly Mixdowns! I was kinda bummed out about it until Mica (@MissSoulist21XL) hit me up on AIM and was askin me questions for one of her school assignments. We ended up chatting a little bit and I asked her for her opinion on what kind of mix to make this week. She said something about having a crush on some dude and she was feeling that kinda stuff. Well I'm no longer in that "Crushing on Karen" phase, so I told her I wasn't really in the mood to do that kind of mix. Then she started rattling off names of songs that were on previous mixtapes, but one song title stuck out: "I Use To Love H.E.R." by Common. That was it! I've been wanting to show Karen that movie "Brown Sugar" where "I Use to Love H.E.R." was a key ingredient to how the movie plays out. And that's pretty much the story behind this mix. Nothing too spectacular, really. Hope you enjoy the mix though. LET'S GOOO!!!
